What is Palladium?

If someone says 'palladium', what's the first thing that springs to mind? Those black sneakers that the kids wore in the 1990s? A famous London theatre? Hmm, how about a precious metal?
Palladium is in fact a member of the platinum family, sharing many chemical properties with the favoured silver metal. It's no surprise, then, to learn that palladium is used in jewellery making. It was discovered in 1803 and has been used to make palladium rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces since about 1939.
Only recently has the public become aware of the tarnish-free metal, however and it is increasing in popularity as a cheaper, but no less precious, alternative to platinum. To put this in perspective, know that palladium is thirty times more rare than gold.
It's worth noting that palladium is considered a good investment these days as it is used in many products while sources are fairly geographically limited. It is mined predominantly in Russia and South Africa, with a few smaller mines in North America.
As to its uses, palladium is being utilised increasing by the automotive industry, particularly in Asia, as a key component in catalytic converters. It is also used extensively within engineering, as it can be transformed into leaf form and is more durable than gold.
Within the medical profession, scientists are beginning to use the precious metal in the treatment of prostate and breast cancer, as it has been discovered palladium is compatible with human tissue. Meanwhile in dentistry, it's being used to make crowns and bridges.
Quite some credentials, you'll surely agree. What makes palladium the ideal metal for jewellery is that it is light but strong and its natural silver/white colouration can 'enhance the beauty of diamonds and gemstones set within it'. It is delicate enough that it can be manipulated into myriad designs which other precious metals cannot easily form, yet is heavy enough to 'convey luxury'.
As one expert points out, palladium is certainly the metal of the moment.

Gifts for a new Girlfriend

Your new relationship is going pretty well. You've been seeing a new girl for a little while and think it could be going somewhere. Everything is progressing just fine until she drops a bombshell that all new boyfriends dread (no, not that one): that it's her birthday in a couple of weeks' time.
Panic ensues. It's hard enough buying for women, but it's nigh-on impossible to buy something appropriate for someone you've only been seeing for a short time. This isn't just about buying a gift, it's about the sentiment, the message that it conveys. Get it right and she'll remember it forever. Get it wrong and suffer the consequences.
Is a gift really necessary? In a word: yes, but it doesn't need to be excessively expensive or flamboyant. Here are a few more than acceptable ideas for the perfect present.
Flowers rarely hit the wrong note, as most women love them. If possible, find out her favourite species or at least her favourite colour. Do purchase a decent-looking bunch, not just something that's in the reduced bin. Bear in mind that certain flowers are said to represent certain feelings and others are 'more appropriate' for certain star signs, so you could do some research and make the bouquet ultra personal.
While diamonds are reportedly a girl's best friend, buying some 24 carat sparkly rocks might be a bit premature so early on in a relationship. Jewellery is always appreciated, though, so why not tone it down? Gemstone necklaces featuring her birthstone - aquamarine for March, opal for October, etc - again really personalise the gift and demonstrate that you've made an effort because you care.
If funds are limited, how about making her a CD - a modern evolution of a mix tape - downloading songs that have special meaning or that you know she simply loves? Print out a funky cover and indicate the relevance of each track. Accompany that with a birthday cake and she's sure to be putty in your hands!
Something that many men neglect / forget / ignore is a birthday card, but don't. For many women, the card is the more important than the gift as it's something she can treasure long after the flowers have died. Choose wisely and write something a little more than simply your name.
This might sound like a lot of effort to go to, but if you really like this girl, it won't seem too taxing. Plus when it's your birthday, she'll really have to up the ante!

Top Looks For This Season: Animal Prints!

Today's fashion-forward woman is aware that animal prints are the hottest new development on the haute couture scene. Witnessed at the latest New York Fashion Week and on Paris runways, all kinds of new animal prints have been highlighted for the coming season, making the new styles fun and sassy. Bold panda and giraffe prints, as well as the better-known leopard prints that have been around since the 1950’s, have created playful fashion motifs.
While the prints never seem to go out of style, there are certain tricks to employ in order to keep them looking wild and trendy, but unified in a way that is simple and attractive. “Less is more,” is the primary rule when working with the animal print wardrobe. For example, if a dress is made of a leopard print fabric, the shoes and handbag should pick up one of the colors in the print, such as black or brown, rather than repeat the pattern. Because of the complexities of the prints, it is easy to go overboard by adding too much of a good thing.
If an animal print blouse is worn, solid pants work best, especially if wearing matching animal print shoes. This solid color between the blouse and shoe give the overall look a more unified feel. If a hat is worn, it should be a solid color, but a touch of animal print on the band is fine. On the other hand, animal print accessories look great with solid colors.
A simple black dress can become a luxury wardrobe item with the addition of a narrow, animal print belt, a matching handbag in an animal print, and, perhaps a wide brimmed hat with matching animal print band. The sky is the limit, actually, but one should not become overly zealous with all of the different choices there are to be made. Choose only one animal print per outfit and do not risk mixing animal prints. However, other prints can mix well with animal prints. A leopard print top with a skirt that has polka dots on it, for example, can work if the dots are approximately the same size as the circular shaped parts of the leopard print or smaller.
The matching boot and handbag should be oversized when worn with animal prints. Tall, over-the-knee boots and the large, tote-style handbag are the perfect accompaniments to calm down the wild print.
