Contrary to popular belief, your main duty as a grandparent is not
to shower your grandkids with presents each time their birthday or Christmas
rolls around. Yes, it's nice to spoil them, but why not consider getting them
gifts that will stay with them for a lifetime; creating great memories that
can't be bought for any amount of money? You can achieve this by putting some
thought into your gift instead of just buying them the latest in thing.
For example, opting for books for children is
a great idea - particularly if you invest in a gorgeous leather-bound set.
They'll not only get the enjoyment of reading them (maybe with you!), but will
also be able to hand them down to their own kids once the time comes. This is a
gift that yes, money can buy, but it means so much more than that.
You might also want to opt for toys that will stand the test of
time, such as classic wooden cars or a rocking horse; whatever your grandchild
is into. These are also things that can be handed down to the next generation
and you'll likely spend hours just sitting playing with them; providing a great
bonding experience for the pair of you. They aren't as flashy as electronic
toys but your little one will likely love the variety. It's come from their
beloved grandma or granddad too, so they'll love it simply for that!
Why not combine education with fun by investing in a music
instrument for your little one? If you're musically-inclined, pick out
something that's easy to use and make your bonding time your chance to teach
them a simple song. You could opt for a xylophone, a mini keyboard, toy drum or
even a good old harmonica. The latter is really quite simple to play and if you
get one too, the pair of you could have jamming sessions! What a great
experience to give your grandchild... one that they'll cherish forever.
